Agriculture in Diu is severely limited by the island's sandy soil, rocky terrain, and lack of abundant freshwater resources.
The farming that does occur is primarily subsistence-based or small-scale. The main crops cultivated include pearl millet (bajra), sorghum (jowar), and groundnuts. The island's landscape is dotted with coconut groves and the unique branching Hokka trees, which yield a fruit occasionally consumed locally. To supplement the lack of agricultural output, Diu relies heavily on imports of fresh produce, dairy, and grains from neighboring Gujarat.
