Daman is located on the western coast of India, opening out into the Arabian Sea. It is geographically enclaved on its landward sides by the Valsad district of Gujarat state. The defining geographical feature of the city is the Daman Ganga River, which flows westward through the region and empties into the Arabian Sea, cleanly slicing the city into Moti Daman on the southern bank and Nani Daman on the northern bank.
The physical geography is predominantly a low-lying coastal plain. The soils are alluvial and fertile, historically supporting dense vegetation and agriculture. Mangrove forests dot the estuary where the river meets the sea, providing a vital ecosystem for local marine and bird life. The coastline features several distinct beaches, most notably Devka Beach in the north and Jampore Beach in the south.
