The city transformed into an industrial powerhouse starting in the late 1980s, when the Central Government introduced lucrative tax holidays and exemptions to spur development in the Union Territory. Although many of those tax benefits have since been phased out, the industrial infrastructure and proximity to major business hubs like Mumbai and Surat have sustained its manufacturing dominance.
Tourism is the other major economic engine. Capitalizing on its status as an oasis where alcohol is legal—nestled against the prohibition state of Gujarat—Daman's hospitality sector thrives. A vast network of hotels, resorts, restaurants, and beachfront businesses provides significant employment.
The cost of living is moderate, and the per capita income of the territory ranks among the highest in India, reflecting the intense industrial output relative to the small geographic area.
