Agriculture

While agriculture was once the primary livelihood of the indigenous population, it has been largely eclipsed by industrialization and urbanization. However, the fertile soil still supports some agricultural activity, primarily on the outskirts of the city.

Key crops include paddy (rice), pulses, and an array of tropical fruits such as coconuts, mangoes, bananas, and sapota (chikoo). Animal husbandry and poultry farming are practiced on a small scale. Forestry is negligible, but marine fisheries are highly productive, supplying both local consumption and export markets.
