Agriculture

While the city proper is industrialized, the economy of the surrounding Raigarh district relies heavily on agriculture. Paddy (rice) is the dominant crop, thriving in the region's fertile plains and monsoon climate.

In addition to traditional farming, the region is famous for sericulture—specifically the rearing of silkworms on native trees to produce Kosa silk. Forestry also plays a crucial economic role, with rural populations collecting non-timber forest products like Mahua, Tendu leaves, and Chironji, which supplement agricultural incomes.
