The topography of Mahasamund city is predominantly flat, sitting at an average elevation of 318 meters (1,043 feet) above sea level. This flat expanse makes it ideal for urban expansion and agriculture. While the city itself does not feature significant elevation changes or mountains, the broader district is flanked by slight topographical undulations, particularly towards the east and south, where the plains transition into the forested foothills marking the border with Odisha. Flood plains are present along the banks of the Mahanadi and its tributaries in the wider district.
