Geography

Mahasamund is located in the central-eastern part of Chhattisgarh, lying in the fertile plains of the Mahanadi River basin. The Mahanadi River, the lifeline of Chhattisgarh, flows along the periphery of the district, heavily influencing the region's geography and agricultural viability. The city itself is situated on relatively flat terrain, characteristic of the central Chhattisgarhi plains.

The surrounding district is a blend of agricultural expanses and dense deciduous forests. The soil in the region is predominantly of the red and yellow varieties, locally known as *Matasi* and *Bhata*, which are highly conducive to paddy cultivation. To the east, the district borders the state of Odisha, where the landscape begins to gently undulate into forested hills.
