The city's demographic makeup is highly diverse; while the native Chhattisgarhi population forms the cultural backbone, the presence of national public sector companies (NTPC, SECL, BALCO) has drawn engineers, laborers, and professionals from every corner of India.
This migration has created a cosmopolitan, multi-ethnic environment. Hindi and Chhattisgarhi are the most widely spoken languages, but Bengali, Odia, Marathi, Telugu, and English are also commonly heard.
