The topography of Jagdalpur is primarily that of an undulating plateau. The city itself is relatively flat, allowing for standard urban development, but it is surrounded by gently rolling hills and dense forest cover.
To the west of the city, the Indravati River drops dramatically at Chitrakote, forming a massive horseshoe-shaped gorge. To the southeast lies the Kanger Valley, known for its deep gorges, limestone caves (such as Kotumsar and Dandak caves), and steep forested gradients. The elevation helps moderate the climate compared to the lower plains of central India. There are no major mountains within the city limits, but the broader Bastar plateau features numerous elevated ridges and forested hillocks.
