Dhamtari is situated in the fertile Mahanadi river basin in the central part of Chhattisgarh. The Mahanadi, the principal river of the state, originates in the Sihawa hills situated in the Dhamtari district and flows through the region, providing vital water resources. The city itself sits on relatively level ground, flanked by extensive agricultural fields.
The district's geography is characterized by a mix of fertile plains in the north and dense, undulating forests in the south. The southern tracts are covered in rich tropical forests, predominantly consisting of Sal, Teak, and Bamboo, which transition into the neighboring Bastar region. The area is also home to the Sitanadi Wildlife Sanctuary, known for its diverse flora, fauna, and conservation efforts for leopards and flying squirrels.
