The topography of Bilaspur is generally flat and uniform, typical of the central Chhattisgarh plain, sitting at an average elevation of 264 meters (866 feet) above sea level. The urban landscape is primarily a flood plain created by the Arpa River, characterized by gentle, barely perceptible slopes that facilitate natural drainage toward the riverbed.
To the north and northwest of the city, the topography begins to undulate, gradually rising into the foothills of the Maikal Range—a prominent hill system connecting the Satpura and Vindhya ranges. While the city itself features no major mountains or deep canyons, these nearby ranges provide a scenic and ecologically significant topographical border.
