Bhilai is situated in the central plains of India within the Durg district of Chhattisgarh. The city lies on the fertile plains of the Mahanadi River basin. The Seonath (Shivnath) River, a major tributary of the Mahanadi, flows just west of the city and acts as a crucial water source for both the population and the local industries.
The city's physical geography is marked by flat, arable land interspersed with carefully maintained urban forests and green belts. Because it was developed as a planned industrial city, it features multiple man-made water bodies, most notably the Maroda Sector reservoir, which supports the steel plant's massive cooling requirements. The surrounding region transitions quickly into rural agricultural land, often referred to as the "Rice Bowl of India."
