While Bhilai itself is highly urbanized and industrial, it is surrounded by the fertile agricultural lands of the Durg district. The region is traditionally known as the "Rice Bowl of India" due to its intensive paddy (rice) cultivation.
Local agriculture relies heavily on the monsoon and irrigation from the Mahanadi and Shivnath river systems. In addition to rice, farmers in the surrounding villages cultivate wheat, pulses (like gram and pigeon pea), oilseeds, and a variety of vegetables. Dairy farming and poultry also contribute to the local food production, supplying the high demand of Bhilai's urban population.
