Sukhna Lake is a picturesque, man-made reservoir situated at the foothills of the Shivalik range in Chandigarh, India. Serving as an integral part of the city's original master plan envisioned by the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, the lake is widely considered the soul of Chandigarh. It was created by damming the seasonal Sukhna Choe (stream) that flows down from the Shivalik Hills.
The lake is renowned for its tranquil environment, strictly regulated to maintain peace—motorized boats are prohibited, and loud noises are discouraged. It is a major hub for civic life in Chandigarh, drawing walkers, joggers, artists, and nature enthusiasts to its beautifully paved two-kilometer promenade.
Beyond its recreational value, Sukhna Lake is a protected national wetland and a crucial habitat for migratory birds. During the winter months, it hosts flocks of Siberian ducks, storks, and cranes, making it a prominent destination for birdwatchers and conservationists.
