Patna's topography is that of an extremely flat, low-lying alluvial plain, with an average elevation of just 53 meters (174 feet) above sea level. There are no hills, mountains, plateaus, or deep canyons anywhere within or immediately surrounding the city limits.
The landscape is gently sloping, primarily dictated by the flow of the Ganges and its tributaries. The most prominent topographical features are the riverbanks, floodplains, and the diara lands (islands and riverine tracts formed by shifting river courses). Because the terrain lacks natural drainage gradients, civil engineering and embankments play a crucial role in managing water during the heavy rains of the monsoon season.
