Economy

Patna's economy has seen a vigorous resurgence in the 21st century. Historically driven by agricultural trade and government services, it is now transitioning into a service-oriented economy. In the past decade, the World Bank has recognized Patna as one of the best cities in India to start a business, reflecting a growing entrepreneurial spirit.

The city serves as the major trading hub for agricultural goods produced in the fertile Gangetic plains, including grain, sugarcane, and sesame. More recently, there has been a massive boom in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector, retail, real estate, and healthcare.

While the cost of living in Patna is generally lower than in Tier-1 Indian cities like Mumbai or Delhi, it has been rising steadily due to rapid urbanization, infrastructural development, and increasing demand for premium housing and commercial spaces. The local government is actively pushing for IT and industrial investments to diversify the city's economic portfolio.
