Agriculture

While the city of Patna itself is highly urbanized, the surrounding Patna district is deeply agrarian, resting on the extraordinarily fertile alluvial soils of the Indo-Gangetic plain.

The primary food crops cultivated in the hinterland are rice, wheat, and maize, alongside a variety of pulses. Cash crops play a vital role in the local economy, with farmers heavily invested in sugarcane, potatoes, onions, and oilseeds.

Dairy farming is also a cornerstone of the regional agricultural economy, championed by cooperative movements like Sudha Dairy (COMFED), which sources milk from rural farmers and processes it for urban consumption. While modern organic farming is still in its nascent stages, there is a growing awareness and gradual shift toward sustainable agricultural practices among local farmers.
