The topography of Tinsukia is generally flat, typical of the Brahmaputra river plains, with an average elevation of about 116 meters (380 feet) above sea level. While the city itself is level, the broader district gradually ascends toward the south and southeast, eventually meeting the foothills of the Patkai mountain range on the border with Arunachal Pradesh and Myanmar.
The landscape is interspersed with numerous small rivers, streams, and *beels* (wetlands), which serve as natural flood plains and critical habitats for migratory birds and local aquatic life. Due to the low-lying nature of the plains, the region is highly prone to waterlogging and flooding during the peak monsoon season.
