Government

Silchar is governed locally by the Silchar Municipal Board (SMB), which is responsible for civic infrastructure, sanitation, water supply, and urban planning. The board comprises elected ward commissioners representing the city's various municipal wards, who in turn elect a Chairperson.

Administratively, Silchar is the district headquarters of Cachar. The Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Cachar, an IAS officer appointed by the State Government, oversees law and order, land revenue, and general district administration from their office in the city.

Politically, the city is a crucial constituency. It elects one representative to the Assam Legislative Assembly (Silchar LAC) and falls under the Silchar Lok Sabha constituency, which elects a Member of Parliament to the national government. The city is a hub for regional political activity, hosting numerous state government offices and regional headquarters for various public services.
