The topography of Nagaon city is fundamentally an alluvial plain, lying at a remarkably low elevation of approximately 60 meters (196 feet) above sea level.
The most defining topographical feature of the city is the Kolong River, which snakes through the urban landscape. Because of the flat terrain and low elevation, the natural drainage system is heavily reliant on this river and its associated wetlands. Surrounding the urban center are vast flood plains and marshy wetlands (known locally as *beels* or *haors*), which serve as crucial ecological buffers during the monsoon season. There are no major hills or mountains within the immediate city limits, allowing for unobstructed urban and agricultural expansion.
