Population

As of the 2011 Census of India, Nagaon city (municipal area) had a population of approximately 117,722, making it one of the largest urban centers in Assam. The population has grown steadily over the last decade due to urbanization and migration from rural areas and neighboring districts for education and employment.

The demographic fabric of Nagaon is highly diverse. Assamese is the most widely spoken language, followed by Bengali and Hindi. The city is home to a mix of communities including indigenous Assamese, Bengali Hindus and Muslims, Marwaris, and Hindi-speaking migrants.

Religiously, the population is a harmonious mix of Hindus and Muslims, who form the two largest communities, along with smaller populations of Christians, Sikhs, and Jains. Nagaon boasts a strong literacy rate—exceeding 85%—which is significantly higher than the national average, reflecting its status as an educational hub.
