Historically, Majuli has been accessible only by river. The primary mode of transportation to the island is via inland water ferries operating from Nimati Ghat (in Jorhat district) to Kamalabari or Aphalamukh Ghats in Majuli. The ferry ride takes about 1 to 1.5 hours.
On the island itself, a network of paved and unpaved roads connects the various villages and Sattras. Local transport consists of buses, shared utility vehicles (like Tata Sumos), auto-rickshaws, and bicycles.
A major infrastructural milestone is the ongoing construction of a multi-lane road bridge over the Brahmaputra connecting Majuli to Jorhat. Once completed, this will provide the island with its first permanent overland link to the rest of India.
