According to the last national census in 2011, Majuli had a population of approximately 167,304, though recent estimates suggest moderate growth. The island has a predominantly rural population, with a high concentration of indigenous communities.
The Mising (or Mishing) tribe constitutes the largest demographic group on the island. Other significant indigenous and ethnic communities include the Deoris, the Sonowal Kacharis, and general Assamese populations.
Hinduism is the dominant religion, deeply intertwined with the Neo-Vaishnavite traditions practiced at the local Sattras. The primary languages spoken are Assamese and Mising. The communities of Majuli are known for their harmonious coexistence, rich folklore, and communal approach to village life.
