### Environment & Ecology
Majuli is a global ecological focal point. Situated in the middle of the mighty Brahmaputra River, its environment is incredibly rich but highly fragile.
* **Geography & Erosion:** The island's most pressing crisis is extreme soil erosion caused by the Brahmaputra. Over the last century, Majuli has lost more than half of its landmass. Massive government initiatives are ongoing to reinforce the riverbanks. * **Flora and Fauna:** Majuli's wetlands (beels) are a haven for biodiversity, hosting numerous species of migratory birds (such as pelicans, Siberian cranes, and whistling teals) during the winter months. * **The Molai Forest:** Located on a sandbar near Majuli, this 1,360-acre forest was single-handedly planted by environmental activist Jadav Payeng (the "Forest Man of India"). It is now home to elephants, rhinos, and tigers. * **Sustainability:** The island inherently practices sustainable living. Homes are traditionally built on bamboo stilts (Chang ghars) to withstand floods, and organic farming is the norm. There is a strong, community-led push to keep Majuli plastic-free.
