Arts & culture

Majuli is the epicenter of Assamese Neo-Vaishnavite culture, initiated in the 15th century by the revered saint and reformer Srimanta Sankardeva and his disciple Madhavdeva.

* **Sattriya Dance:** One of the eight principal classical Indian dance traditions, originating in the Sattras of Majuli. * **Bhaona:** A traditional form of theater, where performers wear elaborate, hand-crafted bamboo and clay masks (specifically from Samaguri Sattra) to depict mythological stories. * **Handloom:** Weaving is a deeply ingrained cultural practice, with almost every household possessing a loom to weave *Mekhela Chadors* and traditional Mishing textiles. * **Heritage:** The island has been nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status under the "cultural landscape" category.
