1. Kaziranga was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 for its unique natural environment. 2. It is home to approximately two-thirds of the world's population of the Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros. 3. The park's creation was spearheaded by Mary Curzon, wife of the Viceroy of India, who visited in 1904 and saw no rhinos. 4. It was officially declared a National Park in 1974. 5. Kaziranga is home to the "Big Five" of India: the Rhino, Royal Bengal Tiger, Asian Elephant, Wild Water Buffalo, and Swamp Deer. 6. The park has one of the highest densities of tigers in the world, leading to its declaration as a Tiger Reserve in 2006. 7. Annual floods from the Brahmaputra River inundate up to 70% of the park, forcing animals to migrate to the southern Karbi Anglong hills. 8. The landscape features tall "elephant grass" which can grow up to 5 meters (15 feet) high. 9. Kaziranga is recognized as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International for the conservation of avifaunal species. 10. The name 'Kaziranga' is believed by some historians to mean 'Red Goats (Deer)' in the Karbi language. 11. Four main rivers cross the park: Brahmaputra, Diphlu, Mora Diphlu, and Mora Dhansiri. 12. It contains over 250 seasonal water bodies (beels). 13. The park is divided into four main ranges for tourism: Kohora (Central), Bagori (Western), Agoratoli (Eastern), and Burapahar. 14. The Center for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) near Kaziranga is the only facility of its kind in India to rescue orphaned wildlife. 15. Assam’s iconic highway, NH-715 (formerly NH-37), acts as the southern boundary of the park. 16. During winter, the park hosts millions of migratory birds arriving from Central Asia and Siberia. 17. Kaziranga has a zero-tolerance anti-poaching policy, which has drastically reduced rhino poaching in recent years. 18. The park is surrounded by vast, scenic tea estates that form part of the animal buffer zone. 19. It is one of the few wild breeding areas outside Africa for multiple large mammal species. 20. The Kaziranga Orchid and Biodiversity Park is the largest orchid park in India, located just outside the main gate.
