According to the 2011 Census of India, the town of Khonsa had a population of approximately 9,229 residents, though current estimates suggest this number has grown slightly as the town expands. The population is predominantly tribal, with the Nocte people forming the largest demographic group, followed by the Wancho, Tutsa, and Tangsa tribes.
Over the past few decades, there has been a significant religious shift within the tribal communities. Today, Christianity is the majority religion in Khonsa and the surrounding villages, though many still practice or deeply respect elements of their traditional animist faiths, such as Donyi-Polo and indigenous Naga belief systems. A smaller minority of Hindus and Muslims, primarily government workers, business owners, and military personnel from other parts of India, also reside in the town. Literacy in Khonsa is relatively high compared to rural parts of the district, hovering around 74% as of the last census.
