Situated at the foothills of the eastern Himalayas, Itanagar boasts a dramatically beautiful and rugged geography. The city is located in the Papum Pare district, though it is administered independently as part of the Capital Complex. It is surrounded by dense evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, which are incredibly rich in biodiversity, housing numerous species of orchids, medicinal plants, and wildlife.
The city is bordered by the plains of Assam to the south and the rising peaks of the Himalayas to the north. The Dikrong River, a tributary of the Brahmaputra, flows nearby, providing water resources and shaping the local ecosystems. The physical geography makes the city highly prone to landslides during the monsoon season due to the loose soil structure of the young Himalayan foothills.
