Economy

Itanagar's economy is primarily driven by the government and public administration sector. As a state capital, the highest percentage of the formal workforce is employed by state and central government departments.

Beyond government services, the economy is supported by retail trade, small-scale construction, and a growing tourism sector. Because the state has restricted industrial development to protect its ecology and tribal lands, large-scale manufacturing is mostly absent. Instead, the economy relies on agricultural trade from the surrounding districts, handicrafts, and handlooms. The cost of living in Itanagar is moderate, though the prices of consumer goods can be higher than in mainland India due to high transportation costs across the hilly terrain.
