Anini is located in a high-altitude plateau region of the Mishmi Hills, a southern extension of the Great Himalayas. The geography is characterized by extreme ruggedness, dense evergreen and temperate forests, and alpine meadows at higher elevations. The town is situated on a small plateau between the Dri and Mathun rivers, which converge just south of the town to form the mighty Dibang River, a major tributary of the Brahmaputra.
The surrounding geography is heavily forested and largely unexplored, harboring incredible biodiversity. The Dibang Wildlife Sanctuary, located nearby, is home to rare species such as the Mishmi takin, red goral, snow leopard, clouded leopard, and the elusive Sclater's monal. The area's proximity to the Tibetan plateau and the Sino-Indian border dictates its strategic and ecological significance.
