Weather & climate

Vijayawada experiences a tropical savanna climate (Köppen climate classification *Aw*), characterized by extremely hot summers, a vigorous monsoon season, and pleasant, mild winters. The city is colloquially nicknamed "Blazewada" due to its intense summer heat.

Summers last from March to June, with average daytime temperatures frequently soaring between 35°C and 45°C (95°F to 113°F). May is traditionally the hottest month. The heat is compounded by high humidity levels due to the city's proximity to the coast and the river.

The South-West monsoon brings heavy rainfall from June to September, transforming the landscape into a lush green. The city also receives rainfall from the North-East monsoon in October and November, a period when the region is vulnerable to cyclonic storms originating in the Bay of Bengal. Winters (December to February) are widely considered the best time to visit, offering comfortable temperatures ranging from 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F).
