Population

According to the 2011 Census of India, Havelock had a population of roughly 6,351 residents. While unofficial estimates suggest the population has grown due to the tourism boom, strict local laws regarding land ownership prevent massive mainland migration, keeping the permanent resident base relatively small.

The ethnic composition is overwhelmingly of Bengali descent, tracing back to the refugee settlements of the 1970s. As a result, Bengali is the most widely spoken language and the cultural backbone of the island, though Hindi and English are commonly used, especially in business and tourism.

Hinduism is the dominant religion, celebrated with vibrant island-wide festivals like Durga Puja, alongside small communities of Muslims and Christians. Employment is heavily skewed toward the tourism and hospitality sectors, with a smaller percentage of the population engaged in agriculture and traditional fishing.
