Infrastructure

Infrastructure on Havelock is rapidly modernizing but still faces the challenges of remote island life.

* **Electricity:** Power has historically been generated by local diesel generators, leading to frequent power cuts. The government is slowly integrating solar power to reduce diesel dependency. * **Water:** Fresh water comes from local ground wells and rainwater harvesting. During peak tourist season, water conservation becomes critical. * **Telecommunications:** Historically, internet on the island was almost non-existent. However, the inauguration of the Chennai-Andaman & Nicobar Islands (CANI) submarine optical fiber cable in 2020 revolutionized connectivity. Today, 4G cellular service and broadband internet are available, though speeds can still fluctuate. * **Healthcare:** The island has a Primary Health Center (PHC) located in Govind Nagar capable of handling minor injuries and illnesses. Serious medical emergencies require helicopter or speedboat evacuation to Port Blair.
