The economy of Havelock is almost entirely dependent on tourism. Before the late 1990s, the island operated on a subsistence economy based on agriculture, logging, and fishing. Today, the influx of domestic and international tourists drives the vast majority of local commerce.
Major employers include luxury eco-resorts, dozens of scuba diving centers, ferry operators, and local restaurants. The cost of living is notably higher than mainland India because almost all processed goods, fuel, and construction materials must be imported by ship from Port Blair or the mainland.
Future economic development is heavily regulated by the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) laws and environmental protections, aiming to strike a balance between expanding tourism infrastructure and preserving the fragile coral and forest ecosystems.
