Thimphu's topography is characterized by deep valleys and steep mountainous terrain. The main urban center sits at a high altitude of roughly 2,248 meters (7,375 feet) on the valley floor, but the topography rises sharply on all sides.
* **Valleys:** The Wang Chhu river valley forms the central topographical spine of the district, featuring narrow floodplains that have mostly been developed for urban and agricultural use. * **Mountains and Hills:** The hillsides surrounding the city are intensely steep and heavily forested with blue pine. Altitudes quickly exceed 3,000 meters just outside the city limits. * **Highland Peaks:** In the northern gewogs (village blocks) like Lingzhi, the topography transitions to alpine tundra and towering Himalayan peaks, with elevations exceeding 4,500 meters (14,700 feet). * **Lowest Point:** The southern exit of the Wang Chhu from the district boundaries. * **Highest Point:** The snow-capped peaks along the northern border.
