Government

Thimphu's governance operates on two distinct levels: local municipal governance and district administration, while also playing host to the national government.

* **National Government:** Tashichho Dzong serves as the administrative and religious center of Bhutan. It houses the throne room of His Majesty the King and several government ministries. The National Assembly and National Council buildings are also located in Thimphu. * **District Administration (Dzongkhag):** The broader Thimphu district is governed by a Dzongdag (District Governor), who manages the rural gewogs (blocks) and district-level public services. * **Municipal Administration (Thromde):** The city itself is a Thromde, managed by an elected Thrompon (Mayor) and a municipal council. They oversee urban planning, waste management, water supply, and local infrastructure. * **Public Services:** Thimphu boasts the highest concentration of public services in Bhutan, including the National Referral Hospital (Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital), which provides free healthcare to citizens.
