Paro’s transportation ecosystem is defined by Paro International Airport (PBH), considered one of the most challenging commercial airports in the world due to the surrounding 5,500-meter peaks. It is the home base for the national carrier, Drukair, and Bhutan Airlines.
For ground transport, Paro is connected to the capital city, Thimphu, via the well-maintained Paro-Thimphu Highway (approximately a 1-hour drive). The road network within the valley is generally good, utilizing paved roads to connect the main gewogs and tourist sites. Public transportation consists of regional buses, while shared and private taxis are the most common way to navigate the valley. There is no railway system in Bhutan, but walking paths and trekking trails are extensively used by both locals and visitors.
