Population

According to the 2017 Bhutanese national census, Paro Dzongkhag has a population of approximately 46,316 residents, making it one of the more populous districts in the country. The population has been steadily growing due to internal migration, spurred by the economic opportunities of the airport and the thriving tourism sector.

The majority of residents belong to the Ngalop ethnic group, deeply rooted in the cultural and political traditions of western Bhutan. Dzongkha, the national language, is universally spoken here as a native tongue. The population is overwhelmingly Vajrayana Buddhist, and spiritual life is closely intertwined with daily activities. While agriculture remains a primary source of livelihood for rural populations, a growing urban demographic is employed in hospitality, retail, civil service, and aviation.
