Religion

Sylhet is known as the "Land of 360 Awliyas" (saints) and is a deeply spiritual region with a diverse religious demographic.

* **Islam:** The vast majority of the population is Muslim. The city is spiritually anchored by the shrines (*mazars*) of Hazrat Shah Jalal and Hazrat Shah Paran, which draw thousands of devotees daily. * **Hinduism:** There is a significant Hindu minority. The region is historically important to Vaishnavism, as it is the ancestral home of the revered saint Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. * **Other Faiths:** Small but culturally significant Christian and Buddhist communities exist, particularly among the Khasi, Garo, and other indigenous groups residing in the border hills.
